The Story Behind Night Slashers
is a 1993 beat 'em up game developed and published by Data East for arcades. A remake for major platforms (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows) was licensed to Forever Entertainment, developed by Storm Trident, and released in September 2024. A Nintendo Switch port of original arcade was previously made available under Johnny Turbo's Arcade from 2018 until 2023 prior to remake's release.
The player(s) play the role of one of three heroes (or four, in the remake). Each has different strengths and weaknesses, as well as different elemental powers. The game also has different endings, one for each character.
How Night Slashers Plays
If the players try to simply travel through the levels without fighting, the screen will stop scrolling until all current enemies have been defeated, before allowing the players to continue progress. The "Go" arrow flips over to read "To Hell!" in blood. Night Slashers is similar to Capcom's Final Fight and Sega's Streets of Rage series, which is an archetypal side scrolling beat 'em up game.
Once that boss is beaten, the players automatically move on to the next stage. Enemies may move outside the confines of the screen, but players may not. There are extra pictures and dialogue in the cutscenes.
